Dental Procedure Pain: Get the Facts

What Is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is a form of dentistry that focuses on the appearance of teeth and gums. Cosmetic dentists can help ensure the appearance of your teeth is ready for those photos or that job interview. Read on to learn about how you can address minor or major cosmetic issues.

When Should You See a Cosmetic Dentist?

You may want to consult with a cosmetic dentist if your teeth are chipped, missing, discolored, crooked, or decaying. If you consult with a cosmetic dentist about any of the above issues, they may recommend certain procedures. Cosmetic dentistry is not always necessary, but it will improve your overall dental health, and maybe even make you more confident about your smile.

Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures

There are many procedures to help with cosmetic dental issues. Read on for a few examples.

1. Teeth Whitening: Teeth whitening is a very widely known procedure, but not everyone would think of going to the dentist to get it done. It is possible to try certain hacks at home, but it's not guaranteed that you'd see results that way. After cleaning your teeth, your cosmetic dentist can safely whiten your teeth with a much better result.

2. Crowns: Dental crowns are little caps shaped like your tooth that can be placed over discolored or broken teeth. Crowns can also be used over weak teeth to prevent them from breaking. Your dentist would need to open up your cavity to receive a crown and then trim your tooth so the crown fits. Dental crowns can last, on average, 5–15 years

3. Dental Implants: Losing teeth can be very upsetting, but there is always the option for an implant. If you lose a tooth and want that hole filled, consult your cosmetic dentist. The procedure doesn't sound pleasant, but it's more common than you'd think.

Your cosmetic dentist would have to place a screw in your jaw for support, and the implant would be placed in the spot of the missing tooth. The implant would become more secured over time due to the tissue and bone in your mouth melding together with the implant.

What Do Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures Cost?

The price of the procedures performed by cosmetic dentists will vary widely depending on the procedure and where you get it done. Insurance is another thing that can affect the cost. For example, teeth whitening would be one of the cheaper procedures averaging around $300–$800. Implants are on the more expensive side, averaging about $3,000–$4,800 per single implant. Always make sure to check with your insurance to see what is covered and with your dentist for payment options.
